Isaac Hikaka

Isaac is a civil litigator with particular expertise in trust disputes, relationship property division, public and constitutional law and sports law.  He regularly deals in matters with cross-border issues and cross-legal system issues.  He has been lead counsel in numerous cases considering the interface between law and traditional custom and practices (including tikanga Māori and akaono’anga Māori).  

He has appeared multiple times as lead counsel in the Privy Council and as counsel in all levels of the New Zealand courts (up to and including the Supreme Court) and in Pacific Island jurisdictions (including the Court of Appeal of Samoa and Court of Appeal of the Cook Islands).  He has also lead domestic and international arbitrations.  

Before joining the independent bar Isaac was a litigation partner at LeeSalmonLong.  He has been recommended in the Asia Pacific Legal 500, Chambers Partners, and ranked as a pre-eminent practitioner in Doyle’s Guide.  He is a fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers, a full member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and the International Institute of Space Law.  

He is a trustee of the Royal New Zealand Ballet and a director of the Auckland Theatre Company.
